Introduction
The Sora Sompeng script is used to write the Sora language. Sora is a member of the Munda family of languages, which, together with the Mon-Khmer languages, makes up the Austroasiatic language family.
The Sora people live between the Odia- and Telugu-speaking populations in what is now the Odisha–Andhra Pradesh border area.
Sora Sompeng was devised on 18 June 1936 by Mangei Gomango, the son-in-law of the charismatic community leader Malia Gomango, inspired by a vision of the 24 letters he had received.
The story is retold in translation in a document by Khageswar Mahapatra, written in 1978–1979.
The script was promulgated as part of a comprehensive cultural program. It was presented as an improvement over IPA-based scripts used by linguists and missionaries, as well as the Telugu and Odia scripts used by Hindus.
Sora Sompeng is used in religious contexts and is published in a variety of printed materials, including tracts, almanacs, invitation cards, and similar ephemera. Its use is somewhat analogous to the use made of the Cherokee script.
